Why do possessive men cheat

Being glued to their phone is such a common habit among cheaters that it gets two spots on the list. Because, in addition to being shady with their phone, they're often phone addicts.

I mean, they're trying to keep two — or more — relationships on the go at once. That means a lot of phone time. No surprise here, but it's still relevant. Cheaters are often OK with deceit, meaning lying may be a normal part of their routine. When people are cheating, they often have much better grooming and maintenance habits. A lot of cheaters will make it a point to spend a lot of time on their appearance, whether a makeup routine or just a lot of exercise.

A cheating partner wants to keep you in the dark — and probably feels some guilt — so being overly affectionate isn't uncommon. For New York Times best selling author and "love-life strategist" Matthew Hussey, cheating is "whatever the two of you have decided is beyond the boundary of what is OK. A YouGov s urvey for The Sun found that one in five British adults had had an affair, while a third said they had thought about it.

According to Hussey, though, there are three types of people that are more likely to cheat than others. A study found that narcissism is linked to people feeling less committed overall in ongoing romantic relationships, in part because they like the idea of finding someone better.

And I don't mean a basic level of insecurity that we all have, because we all have our own self-doubts and worries about ourselves. But when someone is so deeply insecure that if you don't give them love today, they're going to find it somewhere else — that's dangerous. Over a long enough period of time if someone treats you coldly or is distant, anything can happen. But on a short timeline, if somebody is constantly making how much you love them today the condition on whether they'll cheat or not, [this is] also dangerous and it stems from ego.

Hussey said "selfish people who don't have a moral standard when it comes to their relationships" are the third type most likely to cheat. According to Winter, there are a few careers that can make cheating easier.

Sherman echoed the idea that travel in a career can lead to cheating in a relationship, saying that flight attendants and pilots sometimes find that they have marital issues because it's harder to spend enough time with their spouses. Are all actors, musicians, politicians, pilots, and people who travel for work are automatically cheaters based on their profession alone?

But these careers do offer more opportunity to cheat, so if your partner has one of those careers, and exhibits some other cheating red flags, it might be helpful to have a talk with them about what you expect from a relationship. If a relationship has some lopsided power dynamics — like one person making significantly more money than the other, or having more freedom in their daily life — the person who feels they have less power may be more likely to cheat.

This is especially true when it comes to money within a marriage — according to Sherman, people who are economically dependent on their spouses are more likely to cheat. One of the surest ways to tell if someone is going to cheat on you is to see if they've done it to someone else.

This checks out — according to a study from University of Denver, people who have cheated in a previous relationship are more than three times as likely to cheat in subsequent ones. Does this mean that you should break up with your partner immediately as soon as you find out that they cheated on their seventh-grade boyfriend 15 years ago? Probably not. Cheating isn't commendable, obviously, but doing it once or twice doesn't condemn a person to a lifetime of infidelity, and it is certainly possible to have cheated on someone without ever doing it again.

All the same, if you are dating someone who you know has cheated on a previous relationship, you might want to use a little extra caution.
