Pittsburgh has the traditional mid atlantic architecture, rowhouse hoods, and dense neighborhoods all around with large business districts, surrounded by rugged areas of houses on hills. Cleveland outside of DT has single family frame houses and some apartment areas mixed in throughout a mainly flat landscape. Both cities do have old industiral areas remaining. I think Cleveland has more of these in the city itself, whereas Pittsburgh's are more in the outlying mill towns along the rivers.

It will be interesting to see how these areas change in the next few decades. Both cities still have significant grit. Pitttsburgh's East End and Oakland is a big vibrant area - Cleveland doesn't really have anything to match that. It has University circle'area but its small and less dense compared to the east end of Pittsburgh.
